SINGLE DELEGATE COMMITTEE

ABOUT THE COMMITTEE

Topic: The Burden of the Border: Debating Global Refugee Responsibility

As conflicts escalate and humanitarian crises displace millions worldwide, one question continues to divide the international community: Who should bear the responsibility of protecting those fleeing their homes? From the ongoing war in Ukraine to instability across the Middle East, neighboring countries often find themselves at the forefront of refugee crises, facing overwhelming pressure on their economies, infrastructure, and resources. Meanwhile, wealthier nations grapple with their own obligations, raising questions about whether refugee protection is a shared international duty or a matter of national discretion.

In this committee, delegates must confront the political, economic, and humanitarian challenges of global refugee responsibility. Should countries establish mandatory refugee admission quotas? Should wealthier nations be expected to accept more refugees, or should countries bordering conflict zones receive greater financial assistance? To what extent should national security, economic capacity, and geographic proximity influence refugee admission policies? Most importantly, how can the international community uphold refugee rights while respecting national sovereignty?

As delegates navigate competing national interests and humanitarian obligations, diplomacy and compromise will be essential. With millions of displaced individuals depending on international cooperation, the challenge is no longer simply determining who can provide refuge, but who is willing to take responsibility. When borders become barriers, who will step forward?
