the status of stateless people

about the unhrc

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is tasked with promoting and protecting human rights worldwide, addressing violations, and fostering international cooperation to uphold the dignity and freedoms of all people. In this committee, delegates will engage with one of the most urgent and complex human rights challenges of the modern era: the plight of stateless individuals, whose lack of legal nationality leaves them vulnerable to discrimination, displacement, and systemic marginalization.

Stateless populations—including Roma communities across Europe, Kurds spanning multiple Middle Eastern states, Palestinians facing generations of displacement, and the Rohingya in Myanmar—experience profound barriers to education, healthcare, property ownership, political participation, and basic legal protections. Their situations often stem from historical conflicts, discriminatory legal frameworks, or state policies that deny identity and belonging. As these groups navigate life without recognized citizenship, they face heightened risks of exploitation and human rights abuses, making international attention and collaborative action essential.

In this committee, delegates will work to craft realistic, implementable solutions grounded in international law and the objectives of the UNHRC. Delegates will be encouraged to engage in meaningful, respectful dialogue that acknowledges both humanitarian priorities and state sovereignty concerns. The committee’s goals include exploring mechanisms for legal inclusion, strengthening international cooperation, and developing strategies to prevent future statelessness. Delegates should strive to produce actionable solutions that uphold human dignity while fostering consensus and diplomacy.
