unhcR

the status of stateless people

about the unhcR

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the leading global organization dedicated to protecting and assisting refugees, displaced persons, and stateless individuals. In addition to providing essential humanitarian aid such as shelter, food, healthcare, and education, the UNHCR advocates for legal protections and long-term solutions to displacement. One of the most pressing issues under its mandate is statelessness—a condition in which individuals are not recognized as citizens by any country. Stateless people often face severe barriers, including lack of access to healthcare, education, employment, and basic legal rights, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and marginalization.

In this committee, delegates will examine the global challenge of statelessness and explore ways in which the international community can uphold the rights of stateless individuals. Participants are expected to discuss the root causes of statelessness, such as discriminatory nationality laws, state succession, and conflicts, and propose actionable solutions in line with international human rights law. Delegates should also consider strategies to prevent future statelessness, ensure access to documentation and citizenship, and support cooperation between states and international organizations. The goal of this committee is to produce a comprehensive and realistic set of recommendations that reflect the humanitarian, legal, and political dimensions of protecting stateless populations worldwide.
