THIRTEEN DAYS IN THE DARK:

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS, 1962

BILINGUAL CRISIS COMMITTEE

ABOUT THE COMMITTEE

In the midst of the Cold War, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, this committee will be divided into politicians, intelligence officers, and advisors from the Soviet Union, Cuba, and the United States. It will portray this tense historical event and add conflicting reports, unreliable sources, and unexpected events that will make every decision a gamble. As a bilingual crisis, language will be as strategically important as military power. A mistranslated message or a deliberately altered intelligence report could change the meaning of a diplomatic offer. Even though only a few delegates have to know Spanish, the rest must decide whom to trust, while those who can translate it must confront the influence that comes with controlling information. It will be up to you to follow your own agendas or make alliances for a common resolution of this conflict. But remember, every second counts!

CRISIS DIRECTOR

KAMILA ROMERO

Kamila Romero is a third year at the University of Miami, majoring in History with a minor in Cuban Studies and Law & Politics. She was born in Cuba and came to Miami three years ago. Last semester, she co-chaired Fino Alla Fine: Juventus Board of Directors, 2006 at 305MUN IV. Outside of Model UN, you will find her working at the Cuban Heritage Collection at UM, setting up the next issue for our campus journal, or looking for tickets for the next theatre play. She can’t wait for MICSUN XIV and see what creative solutions for crisis breaks delegates come up with. Feel free to reach out at kxr1171@miami.edu with any questions!
